" We're trapped on this very thin slice of perception right in the middle of very large cosmos. What we see is less than a 10 trillionth of what's out there!!
- David Eagleman
Humans have been gifted with 5 senses and a mighty brain, a super computer to see this wonderful creation Universe. Centuries we have been struggling to perceive the truth and the book 'The medium is the message' by Marshall McLuhan has left me with a very strange feeling in a good way for our attempts to augment and see true colors. Firstly, his style of writing leaving up to the readers to connect the dots offers a different perspective, stronger and deeper understanding of ‘Medium’ new media designers deal with every day.
I did not quiet get what he meant by ‘The medium is the message’ until a point while as he presented various analogies to explain, our state oblivion to the true nature of medium something so integral like light or electricity, we fail to notice and have turned absolutely numb taking it for granted. He talks about effects; psychic and social consequences of technology on the society carefully choosing not to talk on technology. Electric Light is pure information although medium without content as its used to perform countless tasks to read a book or carry and operation.
What I learnt is medium influences how the message is perceived. There is nothing like good or bad it’s the way a medium is used determines the value. As McLuhan says Firearms or smallpox virus is neither good or bad in itself. As Artist, Designers, Engineers or Entrepreneurs’ it is our responsibility to be careful with new media. Joana Eede article on Uncontacted tribes in amazon rainforest is a fascinating article on humans untouched by technology.
“The new media and technologies by which we amplify and extend ourselves constitute huge collective surgery carried out on the social body with complete disregard for antiseptics. If the operations are needed, the inevitability of infecting the whole system during the operation has to be considered.” - McLuhan
It matters because in the end all the inventions are just the human extension of five senses and absolute reflection of perception of universe.
